SCOTLAND OF INDIA - COORG. MY TRAVEL EXPERIENCE......
It was November 2012, Diwali vacations in India, when me and my family decided to go to Coorg for excursion. We spent 3 days there, precisely. And it was really an amazing outing and I am going to share my experience of the place, the culture there, its main attractions and whether it truly deserves to be called Scotland of India??!!
OK, so Coorg, aka Kodagu, is an administrative district in the state of Karnataka, famous for its coffee plantations and scenic beauty. First Indian Commander-in-Chief of Indian Army, Field Marshal Cariappa, pseudonym Kipper, was also from Coorg region, so it does have some historical background too. No more beating around the bush.!! I'll come straight to the topic.
So, Coorg is located approximately 277 kilometers from the city of Bangalore. We first went to Bangalore, spent a day-and-a-half there and started our journey to Coorg. Taxis or private vehicles are easily accessible, you can rent a car for few days and go to Coorg. There are some fantastic hotels and resorts that you can book in Coorg. On the way, there are a few good spots too. First is the famous Nandi hills in Chikkaballapur and second is Sri Sathya Saibaba temple at Srirangapatna. We skipped the former as we had seen it earlier and visited the later. Its really a beautiful temple and you will really find solace there. One can also visit Mysore for its famous Palace, Brindavan Gardens and Zoo.
After 5.00 hrs of enthusiastic journey, we finally arrived to Coorg. And believe me you I was in love with the place at first sight, really invigorating. Coorg is a very much a typical Indian hill-stationesque town, so those who just love traveling to hill stations (like I do) will love this place. The vibe surrounding is just awesome. There are plenty of tourist attractions in this area but I'll briefly write about the ones which I enjoyed the most.
First, without a shadow of doubt is Talakaveri, the place where River Kaveri originates. Located by Brahmagiri hill, it is 1,276 mtr above sea level. With really picturesque and pristine surroundings this place is indeed very amazing. On the river banks there is a beautiful temple dedicated to Lord Brahma. With cool zephyrs blowing around, the surrounding mountains and awe-inspiring Kaveri flowing this place is a real delight for nature lovers. And even though there are 100s of pilgrims around, we never feel the place is over crowded or something like that, its calm and tranquil always.!!
After Talakaveri, my next favorite spot was Abbi(Abbey) Falls. Located just 8 kms from the town of Madikeri. Irrefutably, it is India's one of the best and spectacular waterfall, plunging down the mountain at an enormous speed. Water from the Abbi Falls meets to the Kaveri river.
This is me at the majestic Abbi falls. The hanging bridge opposite to waterfalls is a good platform for photography for tourists.
My next favorite spot was Dubare Elephant camp. This is a real cool place. Located at the edge of Dubare forest and on the banks of Kaveri, this is the place to do some fun stuff. Activities like still-water rafting, trekking, elephant-ride, etc are available there. But the most exciting among them is you get a chance to rub, scrub and give elephant a bath. Ain't that cool.!! The locals there bring their elephants (mature as well as whelps) near the banks of the river and you can give elephants a bath. The experience is just fantabulous. Of course you have to pay for this activity.
So these were my most favorite and sought after spots in Coorg. Other good spots which I visited were Iruppu Falls, Nagarahole national park, Bhagamandala and a serene Buddhist monastery (Buddhist Golden Temple) near Bylakuppe. Finally, concluding it was one of the most memorable trips for me so far. I was very much rejuvenated after this outing. I would really like to suggest you to visit Coorg if you are looking for a place to relax from your mundane activities and rejuvenate. Trust me its an Elixir.!! And about being called Scotland of India, its by no means a misnomer, it truly deserves the title.!!
